Three Impressions from The Bureaucrat was commissioned by Matan Ben Cnaan for the exhibition of his painting at The Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The painting shows a crowd of people amassed at a location on the outskirts of civilization, confronting unknown forces in the form of a bureaucrat, who was sent to decide their faith. The musical work focuses on three key figures in the painting: the man with no shoe, the crouching woman, and the resisting woman. The character of The Bureaucrat himself is not directly represented in the musical work, but the bureaucracy that he operates for is represented by a series of “inhuman” electronic sounds emitted from a speaker placed in front of his figure. Seated on either side of the painting, the violin and cello voice the human drama of the scene.
Talia Herzlich, violin
Yoni Gotlibovitch, cello
Avner Finberg, live electronics
