Crosswalk Variations is a series of 24 variations for piano. The theme reminded me of the melody a crosswalk makes in Japan, a type of song originally written as an ode to the factory worker or student on their morning commute. With each variation comes not just a different version of the theme, but sometimes even a completely different musical style. Although the piece is in essence a tonal work, it also delves into modality, expanded tonality, 12-tone rows, axis-based symmetry, and other musical devices to create a tapestry of themes and moods.
